Although Smatt's does not specialize in renting bicycles, we
do have a limited number available from our Southampton
location. This is an ideal location to begin your exploration of
the Railway trail. The trail passes through the resort property
and can be followed east towards Hamilton, or the more scenic
route west towards the Royal Naval Dockyard. The Fairmont
Southampton is close to the premier south shore beaches, making
for a relaxed ride down this spectacular stretch of coast.
The
Railway trail is generally flat, however, there are a few hills,
and a few spots you may want to walk further uphill to get a better
vantage point for the stunning views. Unfortunately sections of
the trail have been divided by metal barriers, this is to
prevent motorized traffic from entering the trail. These
barriers are low (1-2 feet high) and our light Trek Mountain
bikes can be easily lifted over. These gates do have an
advantage, you can ride in
comfort without worrying about the rush of traffic on the main
roads.
That being said, there are some small
sections where the old railway has become the modern road. You
will have to ride or walk your bike on the road along these short sections.
Remember, we drive on the LEFT here, the same road rules apply
to bicycles. Although our roads are narrow and twisty, Bermudian
drivers are very considerate of bicycles. They will give you ample
room, and pass you when it is safe.
Exploring the entire island on two wheels is
probably best suited to a scooter, but for those wishing
to get a little exercise, cycling from St. George to Dockyard
can be done in a day. Cycling the railway trail from our
Southampton location is an
excellent activity for the day or afternoon. |
